Drama over forfeiting matches at the Montreal Regional Championship for the 2023-2024 Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour season has ended, but the rules have not changed.
Pro Tour Dark Ascension: Top 8 Quarterfinals
Ties and concessions have been a hot seat for MTGs at high-level tournaments before, especially when a seed invite is on the line. The Pro Tour helped to alleviate some of the controversy by allowing players who win 12 matches to automatically advance to the top eight playoffs. But organizers of regional championships, such as the recent RC in Montreal, are allowed to set their own rules. This led to a verbal agreement between MTG players Brian Bonnell and Eduardo Sajgalik that if their final match went from time to time, they would concede, allowing the player with the strongest board status to advance and earn a Pro Tour invite.
The match was timed and could not end without a concession or a draw. However, Sajgalik did not concede as agreed, even though Bonnell had a stronger board advantage due to his Domain Ramp deck. This earned Sajgalik a 13th place finish, while both players missed out on an invitation to the Pro Tour. The Magic community was quick to criticize Sajgalik for his poor sportsmanship, resulting in a public apology from the veteran player. The apology was not well received by the Magic community until Bonnell decided it was time to "fix this whole thing and move on with our lives."
"I just wanted to clear the air about what happened at the Canadian RC this past weekend," Bonnell said. "Sajgalik [@walaoumpa] reached out to me yesterday to offer his sincere apologies. I have accepted his apology and I sincerely wish him the best for the future."
