Call of Duty: MW3 players think they’ve spotted a trend: weapons from the new season are often extremely powerful compared to older weapons. This has led to a major discussion about weapon power creep, and the opinions from the community are pouring in.

On June 2nd, a Reddit post appeared discussing weapon power creep. The original poster noted that the SP-R 208 only has an effective damage range of about 13 meters. This is a drastic difference compared to the effective damage range of the new Kar98k, another marksman rifle, which is 50.8 meters. However, as one optimistic Reddit commenter on the post pointed out, this range is likely because the SP-R 208 has more damage overall – which I can confirm is true.
Balance is always paramount in multiplayer games, so it can feel unfair when older weapons get pushed to the background when a shiny new weapon comes out. The Reddit thread in question is littered with comments like "I can't compete with this weapon (Kar98k)," as one user put it. "It's mostly boring because there's no shooting, just instant death." With enough players struggling against those with the new Kar98k in their hands, the weapon could be in line for a nerf.
That’s not to say that the developers don’t look at balance regularly; they probably do. However, finding perfect balance with over 100 weapons is a monumental undertaking. A supportive commenter on the same Reddit post, who claimed to have experience with large-scale dev projects, shared a similar sentiment. “This wouldn’t take a small team 1-2 weeks, it would take a lot longer than that,” they said.
