Netflix is officially entering the video game business, the company confirmed Tuesday.
Netflix to add video games within the next year
Netflix announced in a letter to shareholders that it plans to offer video games at no additional cost to existing subscribers. Netflix sees gaming as "a new content category for us, similar to our expansion into original films, animation and unscripted television."
The streaming service indicated that it initially wants to focus on games for mobile devices.
The Associated Press reported that the first games to be released would be tied to the platform's original programming, so we could see a Stranger Things game or an Ozark game. Standalone titles are also possible, with Netflix adding that it could even make a show or movie based on one of its unique standalone games.
