Netflix will add shuffle play to its video streaming service sometime before the summer. Much like the shuffle feature that made the iPod famous, Netflix's shuffle lets you press a button and sit back.

Greg Peters, the company’s chief operating officer and chief product officer, told Variety that the feature is perfect for viewers who don’t want to pick a show or movie to watch and would rather just turn it on and see what comes up. You know, like TV used to be. Is this a genius idea, or as ridiculous as the Bluetooth light switch you stick on the wall to control your smart bulbs?
"Our members can basically tell us they want to skip the browsing altogether, click one button, and we'll pick a title for them that they can play right away," Peters said in an investor call last week. "They don't really know what they want to watch."
Netflix has been testing shuffle play since last summer. Users simply tap a button that says “Shuffle Play” or “Play Something” (Variety reports that the labels haven’t yet been hard-coded into the tests). Netflix then chooses something it hopes you’ll like, based on your past viewing habits.
