But Apple has finally agreed to allow used genuine Apple parts to repair its devices. Apple outlined the expansion of its parts program in a press release, noting that the new process for allowing used parts relies heavily on Apple's Activation Lock program.
The Activation Lock feature ensures that used parts entered into the repair program don’t come from lost or stolen iPhones, and likely from other devices as the program expands. Once the part is cleared from Activation Lock or Lost Mode, it is calibrated for new repairs.
Before they are included in the repair program, parts must undergo a "pairing," which only confirms that they are a genuine part. This applies to all parts used, but is especially important for biometric sensors. According to Apple, pairing is "critical to maintaining the privacy, security, and safety of iPhone."
