Google has started rolling out a significant update to its Bard AI chatbot.
Google BARD's new update is BIG
Starting today, the search giant is rolling out a feature called Bard Extensions. The functionality allows the chatbot to pull real-time data from other Google apps and services, including Gmail, Drive, Maps, YouTube and Flights, to personalize the answers it provides to users. At the same time, Bard can answer more complex questions than ever before. As the company notes, it’s now possible to ask Bard to create a personalized itinerary for you by pulling data from your Gmail account and pairing that information with data from Flights and other Google services, all in a single prompt.
For those concerned about the privacy implications of Bard Extensions, Google notes that users can disable the feature at any time. "We are committed to protecting your personal information. If you choose to use the Workspace extensions, your content from Gmail, Docs, and Drive will not be seen by human reviewers, used by Bard to show you ads, or used to train the Bard model," writes Yury Pinsky, director of product management for Bard at Google.
Additionally, Google is adding a double-checking feature that will let users ask Bard to verify his answers. Tapping the G icon will now prompt the chatbot to search the web for information that supports his most recent answer. If Bard finds information that contradicts a portion of his answer, that passage will be highlighted in orange. Conversely, statements that are supported by what he found will be highlighted in green. Either way, tapping on a highlighted sentence will let the user learn more about what Bard found. The update comes after the chatbot infamously failed to correctly answer a question about the James Webb Space Telescope during its first public demo.
