The New Data Storage Technology Beyond Hard Drives | WSJ Tech News Briefing
Researchers have developed a “5D” data storage technology that can write 500 terabytes of data to a CD-sized glass disk. It’s part of a growing revolution in large, low-cost data storage methods using new technologies that could power everything from self-driving cars to innovative virtual reality experiences.
“Data is like crude oil in the past,” Hang Liu, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology, told Lifewire in an email interview.
“We can extract insights from the data because it’s stored entirely on disk. Those insights are not only important factors for large industrial companies when making strategic plans, but [they] also relate to everyone’s daily lives.”
