The Canal Battery Guard is a device that plugs between a standard charging brick and a USB charging cable. By using the app to connect via Bluetooth and set a wake-up time in the morning, the Battery Guard keeps your battery cool and safe from the damaging temperatures that can shorten its lifespan when charging overnight, the company says.
“Our preliminary testing has shown that Battery Guard can halve the rate of battery degradation, or double the battery lifespan,” Nick Kshatri, co-founder of Canal Electronics, the maker of Battery Guard, said in an email interview. “Not only does this alleviate users’ anxiety about running out of battery during the day, it also allows them to keep their phones longer. Keeping phones longer is better for the environment because it reduces e-waste, and it’s also much more cost-effective.”
A typical lithium-ion phone battery lasts about three years, which equates to about 300 to 500 charge cycles, manufacturers say. After that, battery capacity will drop by about 20%. According to Apple, iPhone batteries are expected to last at least 500 full charge cycles before dropping below 80% capacity.
