Netflix recently unveiled its new sci-fi film, Atlas, with a full-length trailer that shows off mechs, rogue AIs, and plenty of shooting. The film looks remarkably similar to EA’s black sheep, Titanfall, leading fans to draw comparisons between the two—and it ended exactly as you’d expect.

Much of the discussion has taken place on Reddit, where a thread was uploaded on April 24 highlighting how Atlas looks strangely similar to the shooter franchise. “Tell me I’m wrong,” said the user who started the thread. Responses have ranged from criticism of the acting, which is pretty average (as is the show’s rogue AI theme), to outright hostility toward the show in general, to very, very defensiveness toward Titanfall. “Ugh, [this] looks terrible,” one user wrote.
Atlas, which hits Netflix on May 24, stars Jennifer Lopez as the title character who pilots a Titan-like mech named Smith. Smith’s design is reminiscent of the Scorch Titan from Titanfall 2, and the voice lines are similar to those of BT-7274. The story centers on Atlas and Smith braving countless dangers to defeat a villainous AI. The story is classic sci-fi and, at first glance, feels like Titanfall without actually being Titanfall.
The original poster asked if this was an attempt by Netflix to make a Titanfall adaptation, to which one user responded, "No, because Titanfall is defined as good." Another called the film "the Titanfall we have at home," and yet another wondered why studios don't follow Fallout's lead and just make an official adaptation.
