Researchers at the Technical University of Munich in Germany recently published a paper on their 3D camera and haptic feedback bracelet. It’s part of a growing effort to use technology to help people with vision problems.
“New technology can and will fill the gaps for people with a variety of disabilities, including vision loss,” Doug Walker, director of research and development at Hadley, a learning center for people with vision loss, told Lifewire in an email interview. “And when technology devices are designed using the principles of universal design, everyone benefits, including people with disabilities like vision loss.”
The new design from German researchers uses infrared cameras in the glasses to capture a stereoscopic image. A computer then processes the images to create a map of the environment. A wristband provides vibration feedback to help users understand how close objects are and how they are oriented. The glasses even work in the dark.
