Chromebooks and other computers linked to the ChromeOS ecosystem are getting a dedicated professional video editing app called LumaFusion.

Is a Chromebook suitable for video editing?

Google just announced that the software is currently in open beta, a major milestone in the company's long-held goal of bringing "professional-grade, accessible video editing" to the masses.

As such, this software has been built from the ground up to integrate with ChromeOS. In other words, this isn’t just a rehash of the LumaFusion app available to smartphone and tablet owners, and the ChromeOS version takes full advantage of being installed on a real computer.

The new engine is built to handle multiple MediaCodecs with a unified central clock for synchronization, so you’re not tied to a single video and audio source, as the software is powerful enough for multitrack compositing. It also comes with “dozens” of video faders and the same OpenGLES shaders available to Android users.
