Nikon Coolpix A – 10 Years Later Retrospective with a Quick Size Comparison with the Nikon Z30

The Nikon COOLPIX A10 is the latest in Nikon's line of entry-level digital cameras. Designed as the perfect pocket camera, it promises high-quality photos without the learning curve. We put the Nikon COOLPIX A10 through its paces to see how effectively it fills that role.

The Nikon COOLPIX A10 is a handsome camera with a striking silver front and black back. It is 3.5 inches wide, 2.25 inches high, 0.75 inches deep at the narrow end, and 1 inch deep at the wide end. The right side of the camera, the one with all the controls, has a rounded protrusion that grows from 0.75 inches to 1 inch, perfectly designed to fit in the hand (otherwise the camera would be too narrow to hold comfortably). There are several controls on the top of the camera: the power button, the shutter release, and the zoom control.

On the back you’ll see a variety of buttons, including playback, menu, and video. There’s also a directional input that lets you navigate the menu and control the flash, self-timer, exposure, and macro playback. To access the SD card, you have to open the battery compartment, which means you can’t swap it out without turning the camera off. The Nikon COOLPIX A10 takes standard AA batteries, so you can use any old battery you can buy at the store. When you turn the camera on, the lens cap opens and the lens extends out of the camera a maximum of 2 inches. The camera weighs in at 5.7 ounces, just the right amount of weight to feel solid, but not so heavy that it’s cumbersome to use.
