The Nikon COOLPIX P1000 is currently the leader in the superzoom arms race. No other camera offers a zoom range that even comes close to the insane 125x, 24-3000mm that the P1000 employs. Such extreme capabilities cannot be achieved without compromises, however, and it is these compromises that one should carefully consider before investing in Nikon's telephoto behemoth.

The Nikon COOLPIX P1000 invariably elicits a series of shocked reactions: Is that a point-and-shoot? How long is the lens? How heavy is it? It’s a truly striking camera that stands out in a crowded market. At first glance, it looks like a pro-level DSLR, and the truth is, the P1000 shares more than a few similarities with its interchangeable-lens brethren.

The body of the P1000 is large and feels solid, though it is perhaps unexpectedly lighter than you might expect for a device of its size. This is a big camera – some might say too big – though in some ways that size can be an advantage over a more portable point-and-shoot. Those with large hands will find this camera to feel more comfortable in the hand than even some high-end DSLRs and mirrorless cameras.
