According to some experts, artificial intelligence (AI) is not yet self-aware, but it could have human intelligence.
Google Engineer on His Intelligent AI Claim
The idea that AI might think like humans suddenly came into the spotlight after Google engineer Blake Lemoine said in an interview that he believes one of the company’s AI projects has achieved consciousness. Lemoine has been put on paid leave from work, and observers have been quick to criticize his observations.
“I think he means that the chatbot has human intelligence,” Kentaro Toyama, a professor of community intelligence at the University of Michigan who researches AI and the author of Geek Heresy: Rescuing Social Change from the Cult of Technology, told Lifewire in an email interview. “And he’s probably right about that. Today’s technology is certainly within the realm of human intelligence.”
In an interview with the Washington Post , Lemoine noted that one of Google's AI systems could have its own feelings and that its "wishes" should be respected. But Google says that The Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA) is merely a technology that can have free-form conversations.
