The VALORANT meta never stays stagnant, thanks to Riot Games adding regular updates and keeping things fresh. Unfortunately, agent updates aren’t always balanced. For example, Patch 7.09 brought meta-inducing changes to Cypher’s Trapwires, making him an unavoidable sentinel—and players are naturally not happy with the terror he’s causing.
CS2 Beats Valorant
On Reddit, one player started a major discussion about Cypher’s dominance in the current state of VALORANT, emphasizing how crucial it is to pick the Moroccan spy on most maps. They called him “clearly the best sentinel right now” and highlighted the undeniable benefits of picking Cypher — unreached traps and lots of intel — over other sentinels like Chamber and Sage. “I think they weakened Chamber and Sage more than they should have,” the post concluded, emphasizing that it’s time to adjust the weaker sentinels to reduce Cypher’s “overuse.”
As expected, most players agreed with this sentiment and called on Riot to overbuff Cypher in their latest update. In fact, ranked VALORANT games have gotten to the point where all players can think of in the agent selection screen is someone on their team who can break Trapwires. Team compositions and maps don’t matter anymore as long as we have an agent like Raze, Sova, or KAY/O who can counter the spy.
Interestingly, some players weren't sure whether Cypher should get a nerf, arguing that his Trapwires are very easy to break. "He's not like KJ, where you can literally place things anywhere for info and has nanos that can be used as mollies. Once you counter him, Cypher is almost useless in terms of utils," one player wrote – and honestly, it makes sense. Killjoy has a few advantages over Cypher, allowing you to use her kit much more creatively to avoid counterplay. Cypher's trap placements are a bit easier to predict.
