Music generated by artificial intelligence (AI) is rising in the charts, but the new form is drawing controversy.
AI music should be banned from the Grammys
An AI-generated hit, “Heart on My Sleeve,” mimicked the vocals and stylings of Drake and The Weeknd and was headed for the Grammys. But the head of the Grammy organization said the song was ineligible for consideration. The confrontation highlights the growing tension between human artists and AI.
“It's sparked what I think is a healthy conversation in the music industry about the fleeting nature of human creativity and creation and how it inevitably collides with advanced technology and a business model entrenched in decades of established practices,” James Abbott, a music professor at Syracuse University, told Lifewire in an email interview.
“Heart on My Sleeve,” created in resemblance to the singing styles of Drake and The Weeknd, was presented by an anonymous creator known as “Ghostwriter.” While the lyrics are original work, the song mirrors the artists’ vocal tones without their consent.
