iPhone web apps are getting real notifications soon. But what exactly are web apps?
How to Manage Notifications on iPhone and iPad!
In iOS 16.4, Apple is adding support for notifications in web apps. Web apps are sort of like mini-websites that run on your phone, with their own icons and such, and they're a way for developers to bypass the App Store and its approval process. But they've been sparse in features so far, and even in iOS 16.4, they'll still be a pain to "install."
"There are many drawbacks to web-first app development, but for some businesses, developing a web-first application can be a less expensive option while still meeting user requirements," iOS app developer Tyler Browning told Lifewire via email. "Given that Safari has about 20 percent of the global web browsing market share, there is an advantage for web-first mobile apps to better engage with their users with web notifications."
A web app is an app that uses web technologies like HTML, Javascript, etc. We usually just call these things “websites,” but it’s possible to add them to your home screen, and when you tap the icon, they’ll open as apps instead of just in a tab in the Safari browser.
