Multihoming configurations allow a single local network to share multiple simultaneous connections to external networks such as the Internet. Some people multi-home their home network to share two Internet connections for increased speed and reliability. However, the multihoming strategy can be difficult to configure, and solutions are often limited in functionality.

HOME NETWORKING 101 – HOW TO CONNECT TWO ROUTERS INTO ONE HOME NETWORK

The most direct way to use two high-speed Internet connections on a home network is to install a router that is specifically designed for this purpose. Multihoming routers have two or more WAN interfaces for Internet connections. They handle both the fail-over and load balancing aspects of sharing connections automatically.

However, these high-end products are designed for business use rather than homeowners and can be complicated to set up. Due to the inherent overhead of managing such connections, these products may not perform as well as they are hyped. They are also significantly more expensive than regular home network routers.

By installing two broadband network routers — each with its own Internet subscription — you can use both connections simultaneously, but only on different computers. Regular home network routers do not provide a mechanism to coordinate the sharing of network bandwidth between them.
