Once the temperature in New York City hits 70°F, iced coffee season begins. It’s almost an unofficial mid-spring holiday to herald the arrival of summer. This season, I’d like to recommend a simple spinoff that will blow your flip-flops away. It’s orange juice iced coffee, and you should make one right away.

I stumbled upon this chilled treat when I was in Bangkok last fall. I thought it was a funky, original idea for a coffee shop, but then I couldn’t resist. Orange juice iced coffee was everywhere. I’ll admit, my initial reaction was disgust. But the more I saw it, the more I thought, how bad can it be?
My partner and I bought one with our chili lunch from a food stall (which also sold strawberry juice and iced coffee) and took a sip. We drank it all down. Although it was strange at first, I couldn’t believe how good it tasted. I can only describe it as fun to drink. In the humidity of Bangkok, this ice cold drink gave me the cooling sensation I was looking for. Maybe it was just the caffeine and sugar, but I felt alive. The black coffee is bitter, but the orange juice sweetens the drink without making it heavy like a can of coffee. In fact, the whole drink stays light and refreshing until the last sip. If you like the combination of orange and dark chocolate, this is definitely the drink for you.
