Outlast Trials is the long awaited addition to this horror series. A prequel that changes the single player pace of the originals to a multiplayer game, I am not mad about it at all. In fact, I am very, very happy about it.
The Outlast Trials in 60 Seconds! | Gaming Lore
While most of the fear in the first two games (plus the legendary Whistleblower DLC) came from being on our own with no way to fight back, Outlast Trials has managed to capture that fear, even with the introduction of team play. It’s stayed true to its roots, but evolved into something better.
The atmosphere of the Outlast series is not for everyone. It is gruesome, filled with lots of gore, torture, and sexually explicit content. But for fans of the series, the atmosphere of Outlast Trials fits perfectly with the atmosphere of Mount Asylum. After being disappointed by Outlast 2 in general, I am very happy to have that fear back.
All the maps are designed to be as scary and claustrophobic as possible. The orphanage was one of my favorite maps, with its creepy child dolls being one of the scariest designs in the game. They didn’t even attack me, and I was just as scared of them as I was of some of the big grunts.
