The Overwatch 2 developers have heard the community loud and clear, and in a dev blog today, game lead Aaron Keller said the team is looking at running tests around "several core team composition formats" — including six-on-six.

6v6 Overwatch RETURNS! – HUGE Developer Update!

Six-on-six has become something of a rallying cry for frustrated community members who have been dissatisfied with the game for months. Of course, six players per team was the format used by the original Overwatch before the game switched to five-on-five with the release of Overwatch 2. In his dev blog , Keller outlined much of the dev philosophy behind the shift from six-on-six to five-on-five, as well as some of the obstacles the team faces when it comes to simply bringing back the old way of playing the game, including adding two additional characters and all of their inputs to a game that has undergone a number of graphical overhauls as well as the dreaded queue times of the original game.

“Players are generally queuing Tanks less, which leads to longer wait times for everyone as we wait for a Tank to become available to find a good match,” Keller said when discussing the challenges of queue times under the six-versus-six Role Queue system. Queue times dropped dramatically with the switch to five-versus-five, as games suddenly required half the tanks they previously needed, reducing demand for the least popular role in the game at the time.

So why the sudden willingness to try out six-vs-six again? Well, it's not sudden at all. It's the constant clamor from players to do so. "The community has suggested, only once or twice, that we should test different forms of 6v6 in the game and measure the results," Keller wrote. "We agree, and based on your feedback, we're investigating how we can test different forms of 6v6 in the game."
