Unless you've read some of the best poetry in the English language, the word "Pandemonium" is probably unfamiliar to you.

This clue is opposite the NYT Mini Crossword puzzle from August 9th and I'm pretty sure it's causing Pandemonium among players today (wink). If you're confused, you're definitely not alone. Below are a few hints and the answer.
The answer to the clue "Pandemonium" is "HAVOC". Pandemonium has a few meanings, but generally refers to a riot or chaotic situation. And havoc loosely means confusion, disorder, and general destruction. So the two are almost synonymous with each other.
Pandemonium is not a common word, but I will admit (somewhat embarrassingly) that it is one of my favorite words, simply because it is such a unique way to describe a chaotic situation. It appears in the epic poem Paradise Lost, which tells the story of the fall of Adam and Eve. I highly recommend it if you haven't read it; it really is one of the best poems.
