Thanks to new technology, the hassle of scratching your car against the curb when parallel parking will soon be a thing of the past.

Mercedes has shown off an automated valet parking system that will allow its EQS sedan and future vehicles to park themselves. The system could herald a future where most cars park fully automatically.

“For people who are concerned about their safety when walking alone in parking garages, this technology offers the ability to get in and out of their car at a clear entrance with better visibility,” Sam Morrissey, the director of Urban Movement Labs, which provides consulting on transportation solutions, told Lifewire in an email interview.

Mercedes demonstrated automated valet parking using existing hardware that comes pre-installed in vehicles such as the S-Class and EQS in Germany/Europe with the required optional equipment. The car communicates with Bosch’s intelligent infrastructure installed in a parking garage, allowing the vehicle to drive and park itself.
