The password manager app 1Password can now generate virtual credit card numbers, so you can pay securely online without ever having to give out your real credit card number.
What is a VIRTUAL CREDIT CARD? (How to Create and Use Them Safely)
When you’re asked to enter a credit card number, 1Password’s browser plugin offers to generate a virtual card. The actual payment will still come from your regular card, but this adds a layer of security. It’s a great idea and will really help you stay safer when making online payments. However, like any credit card, it can still be abused.
“Regular virtual cards are linked to your bank account and you are responsible for the payments,” Joshua Browder, creator of DoNotPay, told Lifewire via direct message. “If you forget to set it up properly, you are still liable for the subscription.”
1Password is a password manager. All you have to do is remember the password that unlocks the app (hence the name), and the app will generate, store, and autofill super secure passwords. You’ll never have to use your dog’s name again.
