Xbox boss Phil Spencer has finally spoken out about the mass layoffs at the company earlier this year, which he ultimately described as “not decisions I like.”
Phil Spencer's Xbox is a complete failure
Speaking to IGN at Summer Game Fest, Spencer said the focus was on making sure they were "doing the right thing for individuals on the team" while going through "severance packages and other things." He added that it wasn't about his PR or Xbox's PR.
The decisions made were "not decisions I like", but come from his responsibility to run "a sustainable business within the company". However, this does not solve the confusion that arose when Tango Gameworks was closed, as Hi-Fi Rush was a huge success.
Microsoft’s gaming division shocked the industry with its decision to shutter Redfall developers Arkane Austin and Hi-Fi Rush’s Tango Gameworks, the latter of which came soon after its release on other platforms, costing more than 1,900 people their jobs. The mass layoffs continued a dismal year for the gaming industry, with a total of around 10,300 jobs lost so far in 2024, already wiping out the tally for all of 2023, according to archival tracking tool Obsidian.
