As part of the company's efforts towards inclusion and equality, Google said it has improved its facial recognition technology with a feature called Real Tone in its new Pixel 6 phone.
Pixel 6 camera 'Real Tone' review
According to the feature page, Real Tone will allow the Pixel 6 to render different skin tones more accurately and highlight details better. Google says it has worked closely with photographers who identify as people of color (POC) to learn how to improve its facial-detection technology.
Google used the feedback to increase the amount of POC images used to train the photo AI included with the Pixel 6. This diversification allowed the device's face detector to better learn and spot different faces in different lighting conditions.
The team behind Real Tone has also improved the algorithms that power the software by changing the white balance and lighting models. These changes show users what they really look like, rather than artificially different skin tones.
