Google Pixel Slate Review: The Future of the Chrome OS Tablet
The Pixel Slate is Google’s latest foray into the tablet world. It runs on lightweight ChromeOS software that’s designed to be easy to pick up and use in seconds, but can this tablet compete with stiff competition from tablets running more robust operating systems?
When I took the Pixel Slate out of the box, it got some minor scratches. Not only is the finish on the back of the device easily scratched, but it’s also a fingerprint magnet, just like the screen itself. Within minutes of using the Pixel Slate, it was a disgusting mess and didn’t look like a new high-end tablet anymore.
The Slate is noticeably thin, measuring just 7 millimeters wide. At 1.6 pounds, though, it’s tiring to use for long periods of time without support in your hands. This is a large tablet with a massive 12.3-inch display, and that expansive visual real estate comes at the cost of ergonomics. It’s certainly clunky, which is made more practical if you buy it with the optional detachable keyboard (which I didn’t test). The form factor is more suited to a small laptop than a tablet.
