The small Playdate crank-mechanism console recently received a major system update with a new store and a host of other useful features.

Developer Panic, who designed and produced the Playdate console, is calling the brand new storefront Catalog, as it’s been heavily curated to showcase only the best and brightest games from emerging developers. The Playdate Catalog launches today and already offers a wide selection of titles.

This is the first time that Playdate owners will be able to purchase and download games directly on the console itself. Previously, new games were released weekly as part of a development season. If you were bored and didn’t want to wait a whole week to play a new game, you could sideload titles via indie hosting platform itch.io, but that required a computer and a bit of patience.

Panic doesn’t know how often the Catalog store will be updated, saying they’ll “tap it in” as they go. For now, though, users will be alerted to new titles via a flashing blue light at the top of the console.
