Pokémon Go director Michael Steranka gave a sneak peek at the future of the popular mobile game in a new interview, including the long-awaited addition of Galar Pokémon from Sword and Shield.

The addition of new Pokémon to Pokémon Go has slowed down considerably in the game's recent history, a fact that Steranka himself admits and even confidently states is good for Pokémon Go's longevity. Still, the leisurely pace of new content combined with the pressure to add the newest and most hyped Pokémon resulted in the Galar region being sadly passed over in favor of Paldea. Nearly a year after over a dozen Pokémon from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet were added, Galar still hasn't seen any love, but Steranka says that's about to change.
In an interview with Eurogamer on June 15, Steranka said, "Know that as the team thinks about Gen 8 Pokémon, they think about Galar, they think about what makes those Pokémon special, and when the time comes for them to debut in Pokémon Go, that will make sense."
This comment not only hints at the addition of Galar Pokémon to Pokémon Go, but also at Galar features, or “what makes that Pokémon special.” The primary features in question are Dynamaxing and Gigantamaxing. Pokémon Go has proven itself to be a worthy vehicle for retiring battle mechanics from older mainline games, and it would be interesting to see how Niantic implements Dynamaxing and Gigantamaxing to work in tandem with Mega Evolution and perhaps even Z-Moves in the future.
