Pokémon is constantly dropping new crossover products, but the brand’s collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum caused the internet to go haywire because it sold out so quickly. Most of the collab collection has now been restocked digitally, but one key TCG product is missing, which has had a messy effect.

Throughout the day of April 17, several items from the Pokémon x Van Gogh Museum product line, which originally launched in September 2023, were restocked on the official Pokémon Center website. This included figures, TCG accessories, and more featuring artwork featuring Pokémon in the style of famous works by Van Gogh.

This restock is great for people like me who really wanted to get their hands on some of the crossover items when they first released, but had to wait on the sidelines as the initial drop sold out within an hour. This was largely because everyone who purchased any of the items from the collection received a Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat promo card with their order while supplies lasted, leading to TCG collectors and scalpers torpedoing the entire drop.

Not only did the collection sell out almost immediately, but the Pikachu promo card was quickly being offered for as much as $500 on second-hand websites, along with price gouging for the then-sold-out merchandise. Scalpers also caused major problems at the physical crossover exhibit at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, where they stormed the store to buy up the exclusive merchandise and harassed people leaving the museum to buy extra promo cards. It got so bad that the museum stopped offering the card altogether, although it has since been made available at various retailers in the Netherlands.
