A plan by police in Jackson, Mississippi to view residents' Amazon Ring security cameras is raising privacy concerns.
Ring security system program with law enforcement raises privacy concerns
The 45-day trial will allow people to have their cameras monitored by police. Police say the program is intended to curb crime. But the move adds to growing privacy concerns about the widespread use of security cameras, experts say.
“Ring’s partnerships with law enforcement are accelerating the U.S.’s evolution toward a surveillance state,” Larry Pang, head of business development at IoTeX, a company that makes secure devices, said in an email interview.
“The fact that more than 1,000 police departments can mass-submit footage from Ring owners without a warrant is problematic enough. But this new push for 24/7 access to livestreamed footage of our homes and neighborhoods is a privacy disaster.”
