Apple has acquired classical music streaming service Primephonic and plans to make many of its popular features available in a new, dedicated classical music app in 2022.
Apple acquires music streaming service Primephonic
With this recent acquisition, Apple aims to improve the listening experience for classical music lovers and build its own subscriber base. Primephonic shared a similar announcement, stating that current subscribers can continue the service for free until it goes offline on September 7. It is no longer accepting new subscriptions.
“As a startup that only makes classical music, we cannot reach the majority of classical listeners worldwide, especially those who also listen to many other music genres,” Primephonic said in its official statement. “We therefore came to the conclusion that in order to achieve our mission, we need to partner with a leading streaming service that covers all music genres and also shares our love for classical music.”
In the coming months, Apple Music users who enjoy classical music will be able to search by repertoire and composer, use Primephonic playlists, and more.
