Apple Notes is my favorite note-taking app on Apple devices. I love Notes on my iPhone, but on the Mac it could use a few more features, like a way to use Markdown or search my notes from the desktop. Enter ProNotes, a Mac app that acts as an extension for Apple Notes. Think of ProNotes as an app that doesn’t do anything independently, but rather an app that adds power-user features to Notes. The improvements here are so good that it essentially turns Notes into a full-fledged word processor.

Just like you use Spotlight search (or better alternatives) to search for things on your Mac, you can use ProNotes to set up a keyboard shortcut that lets you search through your notes without having to open the app.
ProNotes shows you all your results in a floating window, where you can copy the note or a link to the note directly from your desktop. This is a groundbreaking addition that makes it so much easier to search for specific notes. To configure the shortcut, open ProNotes settings and go to the Global Shortcut option.
Markdown is a markup language that allows you to easily add formatting to plain text. It allows you to do things like easily add HTML headers, for example: # for h1, ## for h2, and so on. The Markdown Guide has a great introduction to how to use this markup language, and I recommend checking it out to learn more.
