Scientists at Oxford University recently warned that “superhuman AI” could be at least as dangerous as nuclear weapons. The discussion is part of growing concern about the potential dangers of AI.
“Existing AI technology is already ‘powerful’ enough to warrant significant caution when implementing it on a global or national scale,” Kevin Gordon, vice president of AI Technologies at NexOptic, an AI imaging solutions company, told Lifewire in an email interview. “You don’t have to imagine Terminator-like scenarios; it could be something as boring as AI supporting legal or regulatory processes that skew the law in unfavorable directions over time, or AI designed to maximize user engagement on social media platforms.”
Michael Cohen, a PhD candidate at Oxford, gave a bleak prognosis for AI during a talk to a British science and technology committee, warning that advanced AI could wipe out humanity.
