The PlayStation Portable (PSP) and PlayStation Vita were Sony’s two attempts to break into the portable video game console market. They were released in Japan in 2004 and 2011, respectively. What’s the difference between the two? We explain.

At first glance, the PS Vita appears to be a lot bigger than the PSP, but that's not really that much of a difference. Sure, it's bigger. It's actually a bit slimmer than the PSP-2000 (that's the silver one in the picture), and it's certainly heavier. Overall, though, it doesn't feel too bulky, just sturdier than the PSP.
In terms of what’s actually on the front of the device, you can see that the controls are largely the same, with the D-pad and shape buttons in more or less the same locations on both devices. The speakers have been placed lower, while the volume and a few other buttons have been removed from the front. The big differences are three: firstly, there’s a second analog stick on the PS Vita. Not only that, but these are actual sticks and are much more comfortable to use than the PSP’s nub.
Secondly, there is the front camera, rather unobtrusively located by the form buttons. And finally, look at the size of that screen! It’s not much bigger than the PSP screen, but it’s certainly an improvement, and with the better resolution, it looks much better.
