The rename command allows you to rename a single file or folder using the Command Prompt.

Rename and ren can be used interchangeably. It is exactly the same command.

The Rename command is available via the Command Prompt in most versions of Windows including Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Server operating systems, and also some older versions of Windows.

This is also a Recovery Console command available from the Recovery Console in Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
