If you’re not saving vacation days for longer trips next year, you can strategically plan around bank holidays to get a series of luxurious long weekends. Here’s how to turn 12 days of PTO into maximum vacation time in 2025.

There are 11 recognized federal holidays in 2025 that can easily be turned into long weekends (in some cases full weeks) with only one or two days of PTO. While we’ve noted many Fridays are taken off if the following Monday is a holiday, consider taking Tuesday instead if everyone you work with is likely to be away or working less on Friday (potentially allowing you to leave early without sacrificing a vacation day).
Wednesday, Jan. 1 (New Year's Day): Take Jan. 2-3 off for a five-day weekend. If you also have Dec. 31 off, take Monday, Dec. 30 off for a full week of vacation.
