After what many VALORANT players would consider a lifetime, Riot Games finally revealed the first look at its upcoming replay system. While it was monumental news, it came with a caveat that might disappoint longtime players: the system is far from finished and will need much more time to perfect.
A first look at VALORANT's replay system!
In a new developer video, VALORANT tech lead Marcus Reid showed off the first iteration of the replay system, which featured some quick flybys on a free cam during a recorded match. This prototype looked pretty basic, featuring a pause and play button, an option to toggle the cursor, the ability to cycle through agents, hide the UI, and enable free cam and agent overlays.
However, he went on to say that the replay system is “nowhere close to launch,” citing several different challenges the team has faced over the past year. For example, replays introduce several aspects that were never considered when VALORANT first launched, such as time pauses, reviewing specific rounds, and rewinding plays as they happen.
As a result, there have been instances of abilities not triggering properly during replays, map mechanics being completely broken, and other issues cropping up with the new system. From casual fans wanting to relive an impressive clip to pro teams browsing through a VOD review, these issues need to be ironed out and replays need to be perfect before they can go live.
