During the early days of Rogue Waters, you may find yourself dying a lot during raids. This happens for a couple of reasons – first, the game is designed to let you die without any consequences; second, you'll likely only have standard crew members helping you, rather than specialists.
Specialists can be hired from the Tavern when you return to your ship after a raid. You cannot hire them at any other time, and they only come with their basic skills. As you continue raiding in Rogue Waters, your specialists will gain experience and eventually level up. Once they level up, you can begin working on a character that suits your needs.
