Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, head of SAG-AFTRA, earned $1.02 million last year, making him the ninth-highest paid union official in the U.S., according to documents filed with the Department of Labor.

Professional athletes’ unions pay the highest salaries, led by the NFL Players Association, which last year paid $8.2 million to its former CEO, DeMaurice Smith.

Six of the eight highest-paid labor officials work for the baseball, basketball and football leagues. The other two were union leaders who received unusually high payouts when they retired.

The most recognizable union leaders in the country — those who lead the largest unions — earn considerably less. Randi Weingarten, the president of the American Federation of Teachers, made $475,000 last year. Liz Shuler, president of the AFL-CIO, made $277,000. Sean O'Brien, the general president of the Teamsters, made $250,000, and Shawn Fain, the president of the United Auto Workers, made $198,000.
