Bronx-born jazz vocalist Samara Joy, who won the 2023 Grammy for Best New Artist, will release her third full-length studio album, “Portrait,” on October 11 via Verve Records. The follow-up to her 2022 breakthrough album “Linger Awhile,” spotlights her not only as a vocalist, but also as a songwriter, arranger and bandleader.

The album, which Joy co-produced with veteran trumpeter/bandleader and multiple Grammy winner Brian Lynch, contains eight tracks and features her touring band, an octet featuring trumpeter Jason Charos, trombonist Donavan Austin, saxophonists David Mason and Kendric McCallister, pianist Connor Rohrer, bassist Felix Moseholm and drummer Evan Sherman.

According to the announcement, “Portrait” features Joy’s lyrics with music from Charles Mingus, Sun Ra and more. The album also features takes on standards, including new arrangements of “You Stepped Out of a Dream” (out now) and “Autumn Nocturne.”
