Rumors and speculation abound about future tech. While some things are taken for granted, like the circular design of Samsung’s Galaxy smartwatches, there’s always room for change. Tech outlets are reporting that future versions of the Samsung Galaxy Watch could return to its roots and sport the square design we haven’t seen since Samsung started making smartwatches over a decade ago.

Design trends tend to come and go in circular regularity. Such may be the case for future Samsung Galaxy watches, which started with a square design on their debut watch, the Galaxy Gear. While later iterations ditched the square design for the simplicity of a circular design, which also allowed them to experiment with rotating bezels, Samsung may be considering a return to the square (or somewhat rectangular) design altogether.

But both forms have their pros and cons, and it’s important to at least acknowledge them. Aesthetically, most people agree that the round Galaxy Watches are generally more pleasing to the eye, and are easily recognizable as a Galaxy Watch from afar. And then there’s the rotating bezels, a fan favorite that was brought back by request.

There’s no comparison to a square design. A square display makes notifications easier to read (that’s why our other displays have bezels) and it’s also easier for app developers. It will allow Samsung to differentiate its Galaxy smartwatches from other Android-based smartwatches. But will it be as simple and easy to wear as a round watch? That’s something for the folks at Samsung to decide. We just hope they put the needs of the user who’s going to wear the smartwatch above any business or marketing plan they might come up with.
