Ukrainian software company MacPaw may be the first to set up an alternative iOS app store, which is now permitted under new EU rules. And it shows exactly why this is a great idea.
How to install an iOS app via Setapp
The new Setapp iOS store will be an extension of MacPaw’s existing subscription-based Setapp service, which offers access to hundreds of apps for one flat monthly fee. Thanks to new European Union rules that force Apple to allow alternative app stores on the iPhone, installing MacPaw’s Setapp will be a lot easier.
"I can't say I'm completely happy with what the App Store has become. I find it very different from what was promised at the beginning of the mobile era. Apple's strict control over the rules and business model has, in my opinion, compromised the user experience," Oleksandr Kosovan, CEO and founder of MacPaw, told Lifewire via email.
On the Mac, Setapp is easy, because on macOS you can install apps from anywhere on the computer you bought and own. You just install the Setapp app store, sign up for the $9.99 monthly subscription, and choose from over 200 apps. They’re not cluttered apps, either. You can grab the excellent text editor Ulysses , the powerful calendar/to-do app Noteplan , or the nerd-favorite menu bar cleaner Bartender .
