Many experts fear the rapidly growing potential of generative artificial intelligence (AI), but not everyone agrees whether the field should be regulated.
Experts Debate: How Should AI Be Regulated?
The Biden administration is asking for public comment on possible accountability measures for artificial intelligence (AI) systems, part of a small but growing movement to slow the development of AI.
“Regulating the technology may not be the best way to do it, but rather regulating the use and users of such technology,” Lindsey Cormack, the director of the Diplomacy Lab at Stevens Institute of Technology, told Lifewire in an email interview. “This could include transparency requirements, liability for misuse, etc. Regulation of who uses these technologies may be politically feasible, such as keeping young children away from chatbots that could promote harm or self-esteem issues, but these — like all online style regulations — are quite difficult to create and enforce.”
The White House is considering creating rules for developing AI systems like ChatGPT. The Commerce Department has issued a request for public comment on accountability measures that would help ensure AI tools do not cause harm and work as their creators claim.
