Why did they have to change that?

Windows 7 Navigation pane on the left side of File Explorer

Windows Explorer in Windows 7 has undergone some major changes, one of which is the new Navigation pane. The classic tree structure of folders and directories from Windows Vista and XP has been replaced by a list of groups such as Favorites, Libraries, HomeGroup, Computer, and Network. The Computer group does not display unused drives, such as the floppy drive or CD, DVD, or Blu-ray drives, until you insert one of those types of media.

In Windows Vista and XP, the Windows Explorer tree view displayed the desktop. This gave you easy access to your personal folders, public folders, and My Computer. This way, all disk drives, such as the floppy drive and the CD drive, were displayed, regardless of whether there was media in the drives.

To restore the classic navigation structure, open Windows Explorer, click Organize, and select Folder and search options from the drop-down menu.
