A laptop that is too hot can actually burn you. Sony has recalled thousands of VAIO laptops due to possible fire hazards. There is also some evidence that working with a hot laptop on your lap could potentially cause male infertility.
As for the device itself, running a laptop at very high temperatures will lead to hardware component failure (video cards, motherboards, memory modules, hard drives, and more are susceptible to damage) and shorten the lifespan of your computer. It can also be a fire hazard; defective laptops have even caused houses to burn down.
