Here’s my story of transitioning to gray hair and staying active on social media platforms that were created for bold women like me. Silver Sisters Community supports women’s transition to self-acceptance, as well as the #GrayHairMovement in general. We celebrate, empower, encourage, motivate, and inspire each other. These are just a few of the online and offline activities that help women with gray hair thrive and live their lives to the fullest!

There is no denying that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But even though internet culture is moving towards a change in mentality and discussion about what we should or should not consider beautiful, the social norms that we have subscribed to are so ingrained in some of us that it is very difficult to break away from them. . My name is Marina García-Trevijano, I am 43 years old and I am from Spain. This is only worth mentioning if you are familiar with the traditional beauty standards in Spanish society. There are so many labels based on appearance, people are quite critical of others and themselves…
I have been to many countries; I spent a year in the US when I was 16 and moved to Austria 18 years ago. The idea that different countries have different standards of beauty is a common one. In the country where I live now, people seem to be more relaxed about their appearance and tend to be less judgmental or not at all concerned with how others look. This has probably made my transition to gray easier than it was in my home country.
I found my first gray hair at the age of 11, and since my father went gray at a young age and I didn’t know him until he was gray, I wasn’t surprised. At 17, my grays became a horror show! I was already aware of the beauty standard that society dictates, that every woman with gray hair should “let herself go,” so I decided to dye it. I started with blonde. I have to admit: I loved it! Covering my grays was fun at first. I got to experiment with different colors, until I was 30, when I chose to dye it what I thought was my “natural color”: dark brown.
