Want to get through a lecture or educational video quickly, but don’t want to distort the speaker’s speech? The Jump Cutter browser extension can do just that by speeding up only the silent pauses during a lecture or talk.
Skip Silence | Google Chrome Extension | Skip silent parts of video and audio
This free and open-source tool scans the audio of the video you are watching and speeds up playback if there is no audio. This is especially useful if you are listening to a lecture from…someone who…pauses unnecessarily…before getting back to their point. To get started, simply download the extension for Chrome, Firefox, or Edge, then load a video in your browser. You can also load videos stored on your computer using the extension. Simply click the extension icon, then click "Open a local file" and drag the video in.
Whatever video you’re playing, you can click the extension icon to see it in action. The bar shows you the volume of the video over time. Anything highlighted in red indicates a pause. You can choose to speed up the video during those pauses to eight times the original playback speed. The result: you can get through a conversation much faster.
You can adjust a few things, including what volume point is considered silent, how much the video should speed up during pauses, and whether to leave a margin before and after pauses. You can also speed up speech in general if you want, but that will obviously distort the presenter's speech more severely.
