Until the mid-2010s, streaming your live TV from anywhere in the world was nearly impossible. While streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, and Apple TV+ have become mainstream in recent years, it was only Slingbox that offered users a “Live TV from anywhere” experience.
slingbox alternative how to use and set up
For those who don’t know, Slingbox is (was?) a TV streaming media device that allowed users to send their TV’s content over the internet to computers, smartphones, and tablets. The technology worked in conjunction with Slingbox software that converted NTSC or PAL video signals into formats that would work on your PC and mobile phones.
As convenient as it was in the early 2000s, there’s no point in using a Slingbox anymore. That’s because we have a handful of media streaming apps and services that we can subscribe to to get content on-demand, and a bunch of other apps that let you watch live TV from the comfort of your phone or laptop.
On November 9, 2020, Slingbox announced that production of Slingbox products would be halted effective immediately and that its servers would become inoperable on or around November 9, 2022. This means that if you own a Slingbox device, the days are numbered for the once-remarkable piece of technology that made live TV from anywhere a reality over a decade ago.
