Smile 2 Director Reveals Secret to Creating a Creepy Smile | Smile 2 Interview

The first film in the franchise introduced audiences to a grin that you don’t want to stare at for too long, or you’ll end up with spooky hallucinations. In Smile 2, a pop star experiences the infamous curse that follows her on her world tour. Director Parker Finn recently explained where the inspiration for the terrifying look came from and how to achieve it.

"I think you really have to smile in a friendly way; you don't want to overdo it, you don't want to overwhelm your face, but it's about decoupling the eyes from the smile, and then it's about how you position your head," Finn told THR. "There's a little bit of a head tilt that happens; there's the famous 'Kubrick Stare,' we kind of leaned into that idea, and then it's all about the filmmaking tools [of framing and design]."

You may remember Jack Nicholson’s famous “Kubrick Stare” from one of his best films, The Shining. In the intense trailer for Smile 2 , there’s an actor who looks exactly like Nicholson’s smile from the Stanley Kubrick film. That’s supposedly his son Ray Nicholson, who has a role in the horror sequel. The 32-year-old actor, who channels his father in the promotional posters for Smile 2 , apparently did his creepy grin scenes in one take.
